Williams called up from Ottawa

The Orioles purchased the contract of right-hander Todd Williams from Triple-A Ottawa on Wednesday.

Williams will join the Orioles for their game tonight in Boston. The 33-year-old was 1-1 with 2 saves and a 3.05 ERA in 14 games since signing a minor league contract with the Orioles in mid-June. He began the season at Triple-A Oklahoma City in the Texas organization, where he went 2-2 with 9 saves and a 3.03 ERA in 27 games.

Williams has played parts of four seasons in the majors with Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Seattle and, most recently, the New York Yankees in 2001. He has a 3-3 record and 5.37 ERA in 50 major league games.

To make room for Williams on the major league roster, outfielder Tim Raines, Jr. was optioned back to Ottawa. Raines hit .294 in 23 games during three separate stints with the Orioles.
