Aug. 3 card to be held at Pier Six

Darnell Wilson will face George "Khalid" Jones on Aug. 3 in a light-heavyweight main event of a boxing card at the Inner Harbor's Pier Six Pavilion that will be televised live on ESPN2.

Three promising Baltimore-area fighters also will be featured on the card, which was put together by matchmaker Chris Middendorf and marks the second time Ballroom Boxing promoter Scott Wagner has collaborated with ESPN2.

"Coming off of the Hasim Rahman fights, this is a very exciting opportunity for the fans to see boxing at a venue that is doing it for the first time," said Wagner, whose past three Ballroom Boxing shows - two of them at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie - were headlined by Rahman, the former heavyweight champion who is attempting a comeback.

Jones, 37, "is a tough-as-nails left-hander coming back from a situation a lot of fighters never recover from," Wagner said.

Jones (19-2, 13 knockouts) was involved in a tragedy in June 2001, when he knocked Beethavean Scottland unconscious during a bout.

Scottland, a Washington-area boxer, fell into a coma and died six days later.

Considered a world-class fighter, Jones went the distance with former world champion Montell Griffin in a 12-round loss in November 2000. His only other loss was a 10th-round KO by Eric Harding.

Jones, a Paterson, N.J., resident, will be the third consecutive left-hander to face Silver Spring's Wilson (16-1-2, 14 KOs).

Fighting on the undercard are junior middleweight Ismail Arvin (10-0-1, six KOs) and cruiserweight Corey Cummings (8-0, five KOs), each of whom is from Baltimore.

Also featured is junior middleweight Maxell Taylor (7-1, two KOs) of Edgewood.

Arvin will try to end the 12-bout winning streak of Elco Garcia (15-2, five KOs) of Colorado.

Taylor, coming off a decision over previously unbeaten Alphonso Williams, will face Clarence Taylor (7-2-2, three KOs) of Dover, Del.

An opponent for Cummings has not been determined.
