Vernon K. Shank, 93, postal worker

Vernon K. Shank, a retired postal worker, died of complications from aging July 9 in the nursing facility at Oak Crest Village in Parkville. He was 93.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Mr. Shank graduated from Forest Park High School in 1928.


He worked for a time for Bethlehem Steel, and in 1935 took an administrative job with the U.S. Post Office.

Mr. Shank joined the Coast Guard in 1942 and served as a cook during the war. He was discharged in 1945, and that year married Mary McClure.


He worked for what is now the U.S. Postal Service until retiring in the 1970s. He made his home in Northeast Baltimore and later Towson, and moved to Oak Crest about five years ago.

He was a golf caddy at age 10, and the sport became his favorite pastime. He had also enjoyed square dancing with his wife, who died in 1983.

Services are private.

He is survived by a sister, Ella Clarke of Sykesville, and a niece, Bonnie Racine of Elkton.
