There's your usual hot Baltimore summer. And then there's a hot-hot-hot B-more summer. Think the latter, according to the latest word on the street. "Hot" as in George Clooney coming to town. Are we talking a new flick being filmed here? Nobody's confirming anything yet. But it's looking good. Just like Mr. Clooney. Oh, and did we mention another sizzling name being bandied about in reference to a Charm City visit as well? A certain Matt Damon? Stay tuned.
And then there's that scorcher that was filmed here last year. You know, Ladder 49, the John Travolta flick all about firefighters? Looks like the Touchstone Pictures pic is set for an Oct. 8 release. And you can get a little preview by checking out the trailer online at www.ladder49.com.
So, what's your favorite summer pastime? We put that question to a few local folks.
Steve Geppi, Diamond Comic Distributors CEO/Orioles part owner: "I think that's pretty obvious. Going to the Orioles games is my favorite pastime. When the team is out of town, it's great to be relaxing in my beach condominium watching the Orioles games on TV."
Michele Whelley, Baltimore-based real estate/business development consultant: "I love eating steamed crabs with my kids."
Mike Cryor, The Cryor Group principal: "Golf. I'm amazed at how porous my schedule is in the summer. Someone will call, and I'll tell them how horrible my schedule is this week. Then, they'll ask 'Can you play golf?' And I say what time!"
Leslie Polakoff, Baltimore School for the Arts assistant director of community outreach: "I love walking around Sherwood Gardens. Guilford is beautiful in the summer. [Husband] Larry likes summer because he likes to dine at every restaurant that has outdoor eating."
Steve Ziger, Ziger/Snead Architects partner: "Gardening. I like to get my hands dirty. I impose a restriction of only blue and white flowers in the garden, because when I go to the nursery I fall in love with everything I see. I've created two little architectural spaces in the back yard - an oval of grass and a rectangle of stone. I like to spend my summers there."
Mary Dempsey, Constellation Energy public affairs manager: "Having friends over to my house in Alonzoville [Roland Park] and sitting out back."
Marty Bass, WJZ-TV Eyewitness News Morning Edition co-host: "I love that there's no formal dinner hour. [During the school year] you're doing the kid thing. You gotta give them structure. But during the summer, they don't have evening commitments like sports, tutoring and homework. So if you feel like staying at the pool, doing this, doing that. You just grab something on the way home."
Paula Rome, jewelry designer: "It's boating and golfing for my husband [Tony Hawkins]. Stringing beads and reading for me. Oh, and walking on the B&A; trail."
Dan Proctor, Kirk Designs principal/interior designer: "Travel. But then taking a respite after long vacations. I was just in Italy for a week and a half for my nephew's wedding. He was married in Florence. It was dreamlike, but it was also very busy. So, a favorite summer indulgence is to take another couple days after vacation. I went to the shore and just chilled."
Amy Elias, Profiles Inc. owner: "Biking in Tuscany."
Sandra Magsamen, Baltimore-based author/artist: "My favorite pastime is doing nothing. I like summer because I can just hang out, sit outside and just do nothing!"
