Salisbury advances in Div. III softball; Towson women out


A 10th-inning single by Erin Ruest brought home Serena Fleming with the game-winning run, lifting Salisbury past Alma (Mich.) College, 3-2, yesterday in a winner's bracket quarterfinal at the NCAA Division III softball championships in Salem, Va.

Lacey Lister went the distance to earn the win for the fourth-seeded Sea Gulls, who improved to 39-6. The Scots, who tied the game at 2 on a two-run home run by Laura Bell in the second inning, fell to 39-8.

Salisbury advanced to face No. 8-seeded Moravian (Pa.) today at 4 p.m. in a winner's bracket semifinal. The Greyhounds advanced with a come-from-behind 7-6 win over Chapman (Calif.), the tournament's top seed.

MORE SOFTBALL: Drexel eliminated Towson from the Colonial Athletic Association championships, taking a 7-5 win in Hempstead, N.Y. The Tigers finished the season 35-28.

WOMEN'S GOLF: McDaniel junior Kelly Cramp shot an 88 in the final round of the NCAA Division III championships in Green Lake, Wis., slipping from fifth place to ninth.

After leading through the tournament's first two rounds, Cramp finished with a four-round total of 324, 10 strokes behind tournament champion Brittany Cary of McMurry (Texas).
