Tree-planting ceremony is scheduled for Friday

The 46th annual Alice Rush McKeon Tree Planting Ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at routes 100 and 177 in Pasadena.

Twenty flowering Yoshino cherry trees will be planted along Route 100. The event is sponsored by the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland. C. Ronald Franks, secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, and his wife will represent Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. at the planting ceremony.

Franks will present a citation from the state to the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland for its dedication to the beautification of Maryland.

The annual event is responsible for the planting of trees off Maryland's state highways. McKeon, a former president of the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, suggested in 1940 that trees should be planted annually near the highways.

To date, the Alice Rush McKeon Fund has provided $66,008 for the State Highway Administration to plant trees.
