Where style and service come together

Synchronicity in Pikesville is a unique place. For starters, it sells couture clothing and accessories. We're talking Chanel, Vera Wang, Prada, Fendi, Gucci, Versace, Gianfranco Ferre -- the kind of clothing we haven't seen much of in these parts, unless you count the pages of Vanity Fair.

Owner Karen Mazer discounts the majority of her stock by at least 50 percent. There are clothes for men and children too. And vintage couture for the hipster set.

And wait, there's more. Like sizes that range from 0 to 26 and a comfy waiting area with toys, computers, leather recliners and a flat-screen TV for non-shoppers. And there's lots of non-snooty personalized attention, too. If Mazer doesn't have what you're looking for, she'll put you in touch with someone who does.

"I want people to feel good about themselves coming in and feel better about themselves when they leave," said Mazer, who celebrated her store's grand opening in late March.

The wide variety of items are organized by type, sort of like a department store -- a 2,105-square-foot department store. "People may not know what they're looking for coming in, but when they come in they'll find it," she said.

Some of the clothes are from last season. Many are current. Mazer buys from all over the country. A recent trip turned up a host of treasures, including a Bolsa camouflage diaper bag just like Kate Hudson's that is manly enough for any dad ($295), a pair of women's charcoal gray Chanel trousers for $390 (regular price $780), a $4,000 Michael Faircloth maize skirt suit for $875, and a trendy black nylon Burberry handbag for $145.

If that's not enough, Mazer plans to add some items relating to mysticism, such as books and Tarot cards, to the back of the store.

Synchronicity is in the Hooks Village shopping center, 25 Hooks Lane, Suite 105, in Pikesville, just off Reisterstown Road. For information, call: 410-486-8866.

Blush in a rush

Blush is hardly a labor-intensive thing to apply -- you just brush, swipe and go.

That's why we were intrigued when we heard that Yves Saint Laurent had simplified blush application with the introduction of its Touche blush. The makeup is contained in a small gold pot with a puff attached. Remove the cap, pick up the entire pot and swipe the puff against your skin. Hmm. Maybe they're onto something.

YSL Touche blush comes in rose, coral and spice, costs $38 and is available at Nordstrom and www.nordstrom.com.
