Resource center at college plans seminar series

The Miller Small Business Resource Center at Carroll Community College will hold its Lunchtime Seminar series next month through May.

Business owners and operators can take a lunch at noon to the free seminar presented by business experts from around the county.

Scheduled seminars are:

March 11: John Enselein will discuss "New Employee Selection and Orientation." Topics include how to create a job description, develop interview techniques and match people to the jobs for which they are best suited. Registration is requested by Tuesday.

April 22: John Deluca will discuss "Succession Planning: Preparing Your Business for the Transition to an Heir, Partner or Key Employee." Participants will learn the key business systems needed to keep the business running and growing, how to develop future managers and leaders for the company, and the role of the board and corporate governance structures -- even for the small business. Registration is requested by April 13.

May 13: Harriet Gillan will discuss "What Do All These Numbers Mean? -- Understanding Your Financial Statement." Discussion will be held on content and format, how owners and managers can use these tools to monitor the financial health of their organization, and what third parties look for. Registration is requested by May 4.

Chamber announces scheduled meetings

The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce has announced coming meetings.

A member luncheon will be held at noon March 11 at Wakefield Valley Golf and Conference Center. Small-business awards will be presented. The cost is $18, and reservations are required by Thursday.

The keynote speaker will be Melanie R. Sabelhaus, deputy administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration. An experienced small-business owner and entrepreneur, Sabelhaus was nominated to her post by President Bush and unanimously confirmed by the Senate. She has more than 25 years of business and corporate experience and is an advocate for small businesses.

The Connections After Hours networking opportunity and business card exchange will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. March 16 at the Carroll County Business and Employment Resource Center, 224 N. Center St., Westminster. Nancy Lynch of My Personal Chef will provide refreshments. This is an informal gathering at which members can network and exchange business cards. Reservations are required by March 9.
