A Pennsylvania man died yesterday morning after he apparently had a seizure and his vehicle crashed into an East Baltimore Street business, city police said.
Officer Nicole Monroe, a police spokeswoman, said Daniel Sadler, 46, of Pittsburgh was driving in the 1100 block of E. Baltimore St. about 8:30 a.m. when the Toyota RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle went out of control and crashed into the E.B. Fluorescent Co.
Efforts to reach Sadler's relatives last night were unsuccessful.
"According to his brother, whom police contacted to notify about the death, Mr. Sadler suffers from epilepsy," Monroe said. "Preliminarily, it appears that he was driving, had a seizure and the car careened out of control, going through the building."
Monroe said an employee of the lighting company, which has been on Baltimore Street for 67 years, narrowly escaped being hit by the vehicle.
"We were all working and all of a sudden it was like a bomb went off," said Norman Michelson, president of the company. "It missed my brother-in-law by 6 inches, or he would have gotten run over. He was working at the computer."
Despite yesterday's crash, Michelson said the business will be open today.
He said the 18 employees inside the building at the time of the crash initially feared the worst.
"It was scary," Michelson said. "We really thought it was a bomb."
