Turnovers hurt Towson in 64-52 loss


George Mason coach Debbie Taneyhill earned her 100th career victory as the visiting Patriots won their fifth straight, defeating Towson, 64-52, at the Towson Center.

The Tigers (9-15, 1-14 Colonial Athletic Association) committed 22 turnovers and lost despite rallying from an early 12-point hole.

The Patriots (15-7, 10-5) opened on a 14-2 run and led 26-17 at halftime. Towson cut the deficit to 33-32 with 13:25 left in the second half, but the Patriots pulled away, turning Towson's miscues into 27 points and hitting 16 of 16 free throws in the final 6:53.

Maine 61, UMBC 35: The host Black Bears (19-5, 14-0 America East) hit 10 of 16 three-point attempts and clinched the top seed in the conference tournament. Missy Traversi scored 15 points for Maine. Maria Brown paced the Retrievers (3-20, 3-11) with 12 points.

Canisius 73, Loyola 54: The visiting Greyhounds (11-14, 7-9 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) lost to the Golden Griffins (16-10, 11-6) after going without a field goal in the first four minutes of the second half, then later going scoreless for a seven-minute stretch.

Holy Cross 79, Navy 60: The host Mids (12-15, 5-7 Patriot League) hit 31.3 percent from the field, marking their second-worst shooting performance in conference play this season. Maggie Fontana led the Crusaders (13-12, 8-4) with 17 points. Navy's Adrienne Roseti tied her career high with 20 points.
