About 25 show horses were killed yesterday in a fire at a Montgomery County horse breeding and training farm, authorities said.
The fire was reported around 6 a.m. at Summerwind Farm in Damascus. Firefighters found a 100-foot by 100-foot barn engulfed in flames and called for assistance from fire departments in Carroll and Frederick counties. In all, 90 firefighters arrived.
Fighting the blaze was difficult because there are no hydrants in the area, the Montgomery fire department said.
Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby structures, but the barn was destroyed -- and inside the ruins, they found about 25 quarter horses dead.
No one was injured.
Damage was estimated at about $500,000. There was no sign the fire was suspicious in origin, the fire department said.
