Margaret H. Wharton, 83, physical-education teacher


Margaret H. Wharton, a retired high school physical-education teacher and coach, died Tuesday at Gull Creek Retirement Community in Berlin of complications from cancer. She was 83.

Born in Princess Anne, she earned a degree at the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark.

She began teaching physical education at schools in Westminster, Mount Airy and Sykesville in the early 1940s. She moved to Annapolis and taught in the Anne Arundel County system from 1943 to 1953, when she joined the Baltimore County public schools.

She moved to Ocean Pines after retiring in 1982 as chairwoman of the Lansdowne High School athletic department. She had been a longtime basketball and field hockey coach there.

Graveside services were held Friday in Princess Anne.

Survivors include a nephew, Jack Noon of Princeton, N.J., and a niece, Stasia Heubeck of Ocean Pines.
