Panel rejects bills on illegal immigrants

The House Judiciary Committee wasted little time yesterday killing legislation intended to crack down on illegal immigrants last night - defeating four bills by wide margins a day after they received a hearing.

Bills sponsored by Dels. Richard K. Impallaria and Patrick L. McDonough would have required law enforcement officers to detain and turn over to federal authorities anyone they determined to be an illegal immigrant. Another bill sponsored by the Baltimore County Republicans would have confiscated the vehicle of anyone who let an illegal immigrant drive it.

Action on a fifth immigration bill, sponsored by Del. Herbert H. McMillan, an Anne Arundel County Republican, was postponed. That bill would prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining a Maryland driver's license.
