Winterthur for families
Designed in the spirit of 18th- and 19th-century European country houses, Winterthur was the beloved home of Henry Francis du Pont and his family throughout the 20th century. The lavish country estate in Winterthur, Del., is offering a new tour, "Once Upon a Family," about the home life of du Pont, his wife, Ruth, and their daughters, Pauline and Ruth.
Geared to families with children ages 4 to 12, the tour allows visitors to explore the mansion's antique-filled rooms (85,000 antiques, to be exact), spaces where the du Ponts worked, played and entertained, and the garden. Historic photos will introduce visitors to the du Ponts, and tour guides will narrate, offering insight on the du Ponts' house parties and outdoor activities.
Tours are offered at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays at Winterthur, Route 52, six miles northwest of Wilmington, Del. "Once Upon a Family" tours are part of the Winterthur Experience package, which includes one guided tour, admission to exhibition galleries, the Enchanted Woods, the children's garden and the Touch-It Room. Tickets are $20; $18 students and seniors; $10 ages 2-11. Call 800-448-3883 or visit www .winterthur.org.
