Tony Cole

Oakland Mills, indoor track

The senior was flawless at last week's Class 2A-1A East regional championships at the 5th Regiment Armory, winning four events and leading the Scorpions to a second-place finish.

Cole, who has finished first in every race but two this season - both individual and relay - won the 55-meter dash (6.6 seconds), the 300 (37.50) and was on the Scorpions' winning 800 (1:39.8) and 1,600 (3:50.3) relay teams.

Cole's performance last week was trumped only by what he accomplished Monday as he led the Scorpions to the Class 2A-1A state title, winning four first-place medals, setting two state individual records and two state relay records.

A three-time All-Metro performer, Cole, also an All-Howard County football player, is being recruited by Mississippi, Maryland, UMBC, Syracuse and East Carolina. GIRLS

Alex McGuire

Arundel, basketball

The 5-foot-9 junior scored a school-record 38 points against Severna Park and led the No. 1 Wildcats to three victories with a total of 84 points, 20 rebounds, 13 assists and 11 steals in three games last week.

Last season's Anne Arundel County Player of the Year, the All-Metro guard needs 32 points to tie the Wildcats' career scoring record of 1,321 set by Sherice Proctor in 1998.

Last week, in addition to sparking the 83-44 win over the Falcons, McGuire scored 27 points in a 73-41 win over Broadneck and 19 in a 75-41 win over Old Mill.

McGuire, who led the Wildcats to the county title and the Class 4A state semifinals last season, averages 24.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists. She's also a 4.0 student and an All-County volleyball player.
