Parham carries UMES to OT win


Tim Parham scored five of his 18 points in overtime as the UMES men's basketball team defeated visiting North Carolina A&T;, 65-58, yesterday in Princess Anne.

Parham shot 6-for-7 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line in his best outing this season. The Hawks (6-16, 5-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) shot 50 percent from the field.

UMES led comfortably most of the game before the Aggies (2-20, 2-11) cut the lead to five with 3:44 left. N.C. A&T;'s Brian Faulcon then made a layup and Sean Booker tied it with a three-pointer before both offenses went cold in the final two minutes to force the overtime.

Booker finished with 16 points, and Faulcon had 13.

Parham, Aaron Wellington (17 points) and Javes Wiggins (eight points) combined for 11 points in the overtime.

Fairleigh Dickinson 73, Mount St. Mary's 65: Gordon Klaiber scored 28 points to lead the host Knights (13-9, 8-5 Northeast Conference) past the Mount (6-17, 4-9) in Hackensack, N.J.

Tamien Trent added 17 points to help Fairleigh Dickinson. Kiel Butler had 18 for the Mountaineers.

Northeastern 81, UMBC 78: Marcus Barnes scored 22 points and Jose Juan Barea had 14 assists to lead the Huskies (16-9, 10-4 America East) past the Retrievers (7-16, 4-10) in Boston.

The victory was the Huskies' fifth win in six games and guaranteed them an above-.500 finish for the second straight season. The last time the Huskies posted back-to-back winning seasons was 1989-1990 and 1990-1991.

Sylbrin Robinson scored 14 points for Northeastern, while Andrew Feeley tied a career high with 22 points to lead UMBC.

Bowie State 96, St. Paul's 88: Letheal Cook scored 27 points, including hitting five of his seven free throws, to lead the host Bulldogs (21-3, 14-2 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) past the Tigers (3-21, 2-12).

Mike Jones and Greg Moore scored 24 points each for St. Paul's.

Haverford 69, Johns Hopkins 49: Jeremy Bass scored seven of his 17 points to help fuel a 23-4 first-half scoring run for the host Fords (10-11, 8-7 Centennial Conference).

The win ended a two-game winning streak for the Blue Jays (14-7, 10-5).

Eric Toback led Hopkins with 17 points.

Catholic 73, St. Mary's 61: Shane Sowden notched his first career double double (12 points, 11 rebounds) and the host Cardinals (18-5, 10-2 Capital Athletic Conference) won their eighth straight.

The Seahawks (7-14, 5-7) jumped to a 14-7 lead in the first half before Catholic went on a 38-9 run.

Joe Farina of St. Mary's led all scorers with 24 points.

Swarthmore 66, McDaniel 61: Matt Gustafson scored 31 points for the host Garnet Tide (12-10, 8-6 Centennial).

Kyle O'Conner and Sylvanus Adenaike each finished with 11 points for the Green Terror (6-16, 3-12).

Gettysburg 77, Washington College 71: David Glaser led all scorers with 25 points as the host Bullets (13-9, 9-6 Centennial) defeated the Shoremen (8-14, 5-10).

Dustin Abbate led Washington with 19 points.

Pitt-Bradford 69, Frostburg State 60: Matt Rowles and Chris Wuest each scored 17 points as the host Panthers (10-12, 4-6 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference) outscored the Bobcats (11-2, 4-6) 17-5 in the first 10 minutes and never looked back.

Myro Small had 16 points for Frostburg State.

Goucher 73, Salisbury 70: The host Gophers (12-10, 6-6 CAC) - led by Garrett Smith's 23 points - edged the Sea Gulls (6-15, 3-9).

Ray Williams had 23 points for Salisbury.
