Century's Dickerson takes 55, 300, heads for states

HAGERSTOWN — HAGERSTOWN -- Stephanie Dickerson is starting to feel more comfortable with the title of fastest girl in the Class 2A-1A West region.

The Century senior proved worthy of the title by winning the 55- and 300-meter dashes last night at the regional championships at Hagerstown Community College.


Dickerson, who also won both events at the Carroll County championships last month, posted winning times of 7.2 seconds in the 55 and a personal-best 41.6 seconds in the 300.

"I knew I had a real good chance," Dickerson said of compiling victories in both races. "I heard I have a pretty good chance at states. I've never won states, so that's my goal."


Dickerson also teamed with senior Jessica Belsinger, junior Teresa Yannone and freshman Kelly Burgoyne to qualify for the 800 relay at the state meet Monday and will compete in the 1,600 relay with Belsinger, Burgoyne and junior Kelly Casswell.

The Knights also will send Belsinger in the 500, senior Lindsay Carlson in the high jump and Carlson and senior Renee Rowe in the shot put.

Century was the area's highest finisher, placing fifth with 44 points. Poolesville, winner of the past three 2A-1A state girls titles, accumulated 88 points and the regional championship.

Despite not winning an event, Winters Mill placed sixth with 31 points. The Falcons advanced sophomore Katie Hertsch (800 and 1,600), sophomore Bethany Perna (pole vault) and their 3,200 relay squad.

South Carroll junior Carolyn Sunderlin scored a victory in won the shot put (33 feet, 3 1/2 inches) to propel the Cavaliers to 18 points and an eighth-place finish. .

On the boys side, Winters Mill junior Joe Taylor claimed the 300 in 37.3 seconds.

The Falcons also will send junior Chris Stinnette (500), junior David Robertson (800 and 1,600), sophomore Ndang Azang-njaah (55) and sophomore Jordan Wike (55) and the 800 relay squad to the state meet.

Liberty senior Troy Massagee qualified in three events -- the 55 hurdles and the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.


Williamsport collected the boys crown with 100.5 points.
