The sprained right ankle of Archbishop Spalding's Rudy Gay has turned out to be more serious than first thought.
Gay, who is 6 feet 9, sprained the ankle in No. 3 Spalding's 49-39 victory at No. 12 McDonogh Saturday.
The sprain's status has been changed from "mild" to "severe" by coach Mike Glick. Gay may not play again until next week.
"We're taking it day to day and we don't want to rush it, " said Glick.
Gay is the Cavaliers' leading scorer (21.2) and rebounder (9.3).
Glick said Gay is questionable for Saturday's 8 p.m. game against Philadelphia's Cardinal Dougherty (17-4) at Villanova University, outside Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, MIAA officials have changed the date of the MIAA A Conference tournament quarterfinals to Feb. 19.
The A Conference semifinals will be played on the higher seeds' courts on Feb. 21 and the final at Villa Julie on Feb. 23.
