Bowie man charged in fatal crash

A man accused of trying to elude Anne Arundel County police and then crashing into a Ford Explorer, killing its 60-year-old female driver, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, police said yesterday.

Anthony William Kozak, 24, of the 3000 block of N. Dale Lane in Bowie was charged with the felony Wednesday evening, shortly after he was released from Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, authorities said.

Police said Kozak was speeding through a red light Sunday night on Crain Highway when he struck the 2002 Ford Explorer, killing Phyllis Gesualdi of Glen Burnie and badly injuring her daughter, Theresa Anne Schoolman, 35, of Stoney Beach.

Schoolman was released from the trauma center yesterday morning.

Police said Kozak had been trying to elude a county police officer who was trying to stop him for a routine traffic violation. The officer had turned off his lights and siren - as required by department policy - when he realized that Kozak would not pull over. The officer continued his surveillance, though, and witnessed the accident, police said.
