Capital Gazette wins special Pulitzer Prize citation for coverage of newsroom shooting that killed five

Guy Whitson, 73, BGE supervisor


Guy Whitson, a retired Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. employee and longtime Westminster resident, died of renal failure Feb. 5 at Carroll Hospital Center. He was 73.

Mr. Whitson was born and raised in Bakersville, N.C., and served in the Air Force in the late 1940s. He moved to Westminster in 1950 and joined BGE in 1955. He retired as a supervisor in 1990.

A Mason, he was a member of Door to Virtue Lodge No. 46, Boumi Temple, Knights of Mecca and Knights Templar. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Molleville Farm Post No. 467 Men's Auxiliary and Zion United Methodist Church.

He enjoyed collecting and repairing antique clocks, and was an avid gardener and sports fan.

Services were Monday.

Mr. Whitson is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Shirley Zile; a son, G. Michael Whitson, and a daughter, Deborah Whitson Ebersole, both of Westminster; a brother, Coy Whitson of Statesville, N.C.; four sisters, Polly Ollis and Etta Buchanan, both of Bakersville, Ethel Schaeffer of Westminster and Opal Ford of Fort Myers, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
