Board of Education meeting tomorrow in Ellicott City

The Board of Education will hold a regularly scheduled meeting tomorrow in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.


The afternoon session is to start at 4 p.m.; an evening session is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Both are to begin with a public forum, during which members of the public can speak on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process.

Sign-up in advance is preferred.


The board will hold an information session before the regularly scheduled meeting, from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., to discuss plans for the school system's search for a new superintendent.

The board will hold its third public work session on the superintendent's proposed fiscal year 2005 operating budget at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the boardroom at the Department of Education. At 4:30 p.m., the board will meet with school-based administrators.

The board will meet with the Operating Budget Review Committee at 6:15 p.m. Feb. 18 in the boardroom. The meeting is open to the public.

The fourth public work session on the operating budget will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 19 in the boardroom.

The board will meet in closed session at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Department of Education.

ACS gathering to focus on education issues

The Association of Community Services will focus on issues in education at its monthly membership meeting, to be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way, Columbia.


Members of the Howard County Board of Education and those running for board seats in the March 2 election are to attend.

Admission to a brown-bag luncheon is free. The deadline to order a lunch is Monday. Feb. 16 The cost is $7, payable at the door.

Centennial High PTSA plans SAT prep classes

Starting next week, the Centennial High School PTSA will offer four SAT preparation classes taught by former Centennial teacher Marian McCain.

Several lessons will focus on the student's PSAT results, to plan test-taking strategies for taking the SAT in May.


Classes, which will be held at the school, are scheduled from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, next week through April 27, and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays, next week through April 29.

The cost is $385.

Nominees being sought for education award

Nominations are being sought for the Howard County Board of Education's new Friends of Education Award.

The award seeks to recognize businesses, organizations and members of the community who have helped to support public education in the county.


Nominations should be submitted by Friday to the executive assistant to the Board of Education, Howard County Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

Stadium-lights hearings have been rescheduled

Public hearings on stadium lights for the new northern and Oakland Mills high schools have been rescheduled.
