Tracks cleared, repaired after train derailment

Thirty-four derailed cars of a CSX train carrying freight and hazardous materials were cleared off the tracks yesterday afternoon in North East, and service through the area was expected to be restored by this morning.

Crews cleared the cars by 1 p.m., then began laying new track, said CSX spokesman Dan Murphy. The 72-car train was traveling from Richmond, Va., to Philadelphia when it derailed in the Cecil County community about 12:15 p.m. Saturday.

Thirteen of the derailed cars contained hazardous materials, and two cars carrying phosphoric acid leaked a combined 250 gallons, prompting the temporary evacuation of about 50 residents. No one was injured in the accident.
