Merritt fitness clubs celebrate openings with contest for car
Merritt Athletic Clubs is celebrating the openings of new locations by giving away a new Mini Cooper.
Visitors touring any Merritt club by tomorrow can enter to win the Mini Cooper. No purchase is necessary, and membership is not required.
The Mini Cooper will be given away during Saturday's opening celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Canton location.
TownMall schedules Valentine's Day events
TownMall of Westminster is holding Valentine's Day events this week.
Jennifer Crafts is holding a Valentine's Day crafts show during mall hours through Feb. 15 in front of Steve & Barry Sportswear.
A Sunburst Valentine's Day Beauty Pageant will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday. This is one of Sunburst's preliminary Maryland pageants. Contestants will model clothing and give a short speech.
The pageant has two age groups: a baby division and a division for ages 4 to 27. Anyone interested can pick up an entry form at customer service in the mall. Finalists will advance to the state competition.
From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, the Psycho Jammers Swing Dancers and the Bill Elliott Swing Band will demonstrate the Lindy Hop, the jitterbug and other swing dance steps.
Real estate classes to be held in Hampstead
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage's School of Real Estate offers "Principles and Practices of Real Estate" classes for anyone interested in becoming a real estate agent.
The next Carroll class will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays Feb. 10 to March 6 at the Hampstead office.
County chamber offers breakfast for networking
The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce will hold its networking breakfast at 8 a.m. Feb. 24 at Best Western Westminster Catering and Conference Center.
Mike Fish, small-business counselor for Carroll County, will discuss small businesses in the county, focusing on Main Street businesses and how they must be treated differently from other businesses.
The cost is $12. Reservations are required by Feb. 17.
Nominations accepted for teaching awards
Nominations for the 16th annual Outstanding Teacher Awards are being accepted until Feb. 23 at the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce.
The awards recognize the men and women in Carroll County public schools who represent the best in teaching. Students, parents, the community and fellow teachers may make nominations.
Any full-time teacher in the public school system may be nominated, except recipients of last year's awards.
Nomination forms are available at all public schools, public library branches and the chamber office, 700 Corporate Center Court, Suite L, Box 871, Westminster 21158.
Forms ask for examples of ways the teacher helps students apply what they have learned, and how they inspire students to learn and build confidence and self-esteem.
Teams of judges of retired teachers and the business community review the nominations. All eligible nominees will be recognized at a chamber banquet April 19 at Wilhelm Ltd. Caterers. Eight award recipients will receive a plaque and money.
This year, the Carroll County Teacher of the Year will be chosen from the eight winners, and that winner will represent Carroll County in the Maryland Teacher of the Year program.
SpringFest to showcase businesses' products
County businesses can showcase their products and services at the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce's annual Business Fair SpringFest from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 13 at TownMall of Westminster.
The expo will feature music and dance by local performers, children's activities and contests, a booth contest, strolling musicians and costumed characters, and decorated toilet bowl races.
More than 70 booths will feature banking, retail, energy, education and nonprofit services and products.
Exhibit booths are $250 for chamber members and $325 for nonmembers. Tables are $200 for members and $275 for nonmembers. Remaining space is limited.

Thomas Alessi named vice president of bank
New Windsor State Bank has hired Thomas Alessi for its loan center staff as vice president of commercial banking.
Alessi has more than 24 years of commercial banking experience, mostly in Carroll, Howard and Baltimore counties. He most recently served as Farmers & Mechanics Bank's commercial relationship manager for Carroll and Howard counties.
Alessi is active in several community business organizations.
New Windsor State Bank opens investment division
New Windsor State Bank has announced the opening of its new investment division, Windsor Investment Services.
Windsor Investment Services, in cooperation with PrimeVest Financial Services Inc., will offer customers a variety of investment opportunities, including retirement plans, college savings plans, mutual funds, fixed and variable annuities, and municipal bonds.
Offices for the investment division will be in the bank's College Square site in Westminster.
