A comment by Del. Gail H. Bates at a legislative hearing Thursday night in Ellicott City was misrepresented in an article published Friday in the Howard County edition of The Sun. Bates, who sponsored a bill to remove the County Council's power to restore cuts to the school budget made by the county executive, complained that the current system encourages school officials to lobby for restoration of the cuts, often encouraging students to help demonstrate for school funding. This is "more like mob rule," she said.
The Sun regrets the error.
