Coppin overcomes 17-point deficit, Fla. A


Jimmy Boykin's scoring helped Coppin State overcome a 17-point deficit and beat Florida A&M;, 66-62, yesterday in Tallahassee, Fla.

Coppin State trailed 47-30 early in the second half, but Florida A&M; made just one field goal in a nine-minute stretch. The Eagles (10-12, 8-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) used a 26-9 run to take a 56-54 lead with about five minutes to play.

Florida A&M; (7-12, 6-4) had a chance to tie it, but Terrence Woods (20 points) missed a three-pointer. The Rattlers were then forced to foul.

Boykin, who hit two free throws to seal the victory, shot 6-for-17 from the field and finished with 16 points.

Mount St. Mary's 78, St. Francis (N.Y.) 64: Landy Thompson led four players in double figures with 21 points as the host Mountaineers (6-15, 4-7 ) cruised past the Northeast Conference-leading Terriers (12-9, 9-3).

UMES 69, Delaware State 66: Tee Trotter scored 20 points as the visiting Hawks (4-15, 3-8 MEAC) edged the Hornets (8-11, 7-4) in overtime.

Aaron Wellington scored 16 points for UMES, which went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds.

Delaware 80, Towson 76: The Blue Hens (13-8, 7-5 Colonial Athletic Association) made four free throws in closing seconds of overtime to hand the visiting Tigers (6-15, 3-9) their sixth straight loss .

Jamaal Gilchrist led Towson with 17 points.

Morgan State 79, Bethune-Cookman 64: Cedrick Barrow's 20 points and five assists helped the Bears (8-10, 7-4 MEAC) down the host Wildcats (4-15, 3-7) in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Johns Hopkins 96, Washington College 79: Eric Toback posted game- and career-highs of 27 points and 13 rebounds to help the Blue Jays (13-6, 9-4 Centennial Conference) defeat the visiting Shoremen (13-6, 9-4).

Kyle Stem scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds for Washington (13-6, 9-4).

The 96 points were the most by a Johns Hopkins team since a 105-62 win over St. Mary's in 1992.

Goucher 68, Gallaudet 54: The host Gophers (11-9, 5-5 Capital Athletic Conference) shot 39.3 percent from the field to take a 30-18 lead at the half.

Garrett Smith led Goucher with 24 points, while Robert Haney Jr. scored 25 for the Bison (7-14, 1-9).

Haverford 79, McDaniel 63: Mark Gabriel scored 28 points and Jeremy Bass had 26 points to lead the Fords (8-11, 6-7 Centennial Conference) past the host Green Terror (6-14, 3-10).

Sam Anstead led McDaniel with 15 points.

McDaniel jumped out to a 6-0 advantage, but Haverford closed the half with a 43-39 lead.

Penn State-Behrend 62, Frostburg State 54: The visiting Lions (19-1, 9-0 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference) withstood a late rally from the Bobcats (11-10, 4-4) by shooting 6-for-8 from the foul line in the closing minute.

DeNelle Hale's 13 points led Frostburg State.

Salisbury 68, York 66: Ray Williams hit the game-winning layup with two seconds left to break a 66-66 tie and lift the Sea Gulls (5-14, 2-8 CAC) over the host Spartans (9-11, 6-4).

Mary Washington 64, St. Mary's 48: Mike Lee scored 16 points to power the host Eagles (15-6, 9-1 CAC) past the Seahawks (7-11, 4-6). Joe Farina led St. Mary's with 12 points.

Eastern 77, Villa Julie 58: Ryan Tozer led all scorers with 25 points on 9- for-15 shooting as the host Eagles (9-11) got their sixth win in the past nine games.

Anthony Fitzgerald's 21 points led Villa Julie (8-14).

Bowie State 96, Shaw 76: Anton Jenifer (Walbrook) scored 26 points to power the host Bulldogs (18-3, 11-2 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association).

Hood 73, Strayer 64: Santo Provenzano scored 25 points as the host Blazers (10-9) used a 20-6 scoring run to secure their fifth home win in six tries.
