The 21-year-old driver of a stolen SUV was charged with two counts of attempted murder yesterday after he struck a police officer on foot patrol downtown, then collided with a cruiser in East Baltimore, police said.
Alufemi Adekandi, of no known address, ran down Officer John Norman with a stolen Ford Explorer as the officer patrolled The Block at 3:37 a.m., police said.
Adekandi fled the scene and later turned up at North Avenue and Wolfe Street, where he hit a cruiser occupied by Officer Daniel Morgan, police said.
Adekandi struck several parked cars, then bailed out of his vehicle and was trying to flee when officers caught him, police spokesman Donny Moses said.
Norman, 50, a city officer since 1979, was treated for neck and back injuries at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. He was later released.
Morgan, a rookie officer, was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where he was treated for an arm injury.
Adekandi was charged with two counts of attempted murder, attempted vehicular manslaughter, operating a stolen vehicle and traffic violations, Moses said.
