On February 6, 2004, CECIL RANDOLPH SMITH, loving husband of Donna Smith, beloved father of Stanley Smith, David Smith and Carolyn Smith and adoring grandfather of Zachary Smith and Madeleine Smith. An internationally recognized researcher in his field of organic chemistry, his research work in the areas of unusual lipids, Alkaloids and other natural products was published in ca 165 papers in refereed journals. This work done largely from 1956-85 at the northern regional research laboratory of the USDA and emphasized biologically active compounds, especially antitumor agents and non-toxic pest control agents. He held a PhD from Wayne State University 1955, and maintained memberships in American Chemical Society, American Oil Chemists' Society, Sigma Xi, American Society of Pharmacognosy, and Society for Economic Botany. With intense interest in social action, he was an active participant in the Religious Society of Friends, Planned Parenthood, The Union of Concerned Scientists and The Democratic Party.Memorial Services will be held 2 P.M.
