Helen A. Deickman, a retired private-duty nurse who was known for her baking, died of Alzheimer's disease Sunday at Frederick Villa Nursing Center in Catonsville. She was 89.
She was born Helen A. Callahan and raised on her family's farm in Cordova. She graduated from Cordova High School and earned her nursing degree from the old St. Agnes Hospital School of Nursing.
Mrs. Deickman worked as a private-duty nurse for 32 years at what is now St. Agnes HealthCare. She retired in 1966.
In 1945, she married Clifford R. Deickman, a seafood business owner who died in 2001.
Mrs. Deickman made her home in Woodlawn for many years, and enjoyed gardening and baking.
"At Christmas, she baked her special sugar cookies, which she decorated with icing. She then carefully wrapped them and gave them to all of her neighbors," said Patti Ormiston, a longtime neighbor.
She was a communicant for 60 years of what is now St. Gabriel Roman Catholic Church, 6950 Dogwood Road, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday.
Mrs. Deickman is survived by many nieces and nephews.
