Russell A. Hankey, a former Glenn L. Martin Co. purchasing agent who enjoyed photography, died of heart failure Jan. 29 at Franklin Square Hospital Center. The Middle River resident was 91.
Mr. Hankey was born and raised on Staten Island, N.Y., and during the 1930s worked as a route salesman for a bakery. He moved to Baltimore in 1941, and became a production line worker building seaplanes at the former Martin Co. plant in Middle River. He retired as a purchasing agent in 1971.
Mr. Hankey enjoyed still and movie photography, especially recording his family's history in pictures.
He also set up and operated an annual Christmas garden in the basement of his home for his children and those from the neighborhood, family members said.
Mr. Hankey played golf and was a member of the Millington Lodge of the Masons. He had volunteered at Franklin Square Hospital Center and Arthur Slade Regional Catholic School in Glen Burnie.
Mr. Hankey was a member of Zion Evangelical Church of Christ in Essex, where services were held Monday.
Survivors include his wife, the former Alice Evelyn McDonald, a retired bookkeeper whom he married in 1936; a son, Clifford M. Hankey of Millersville; and three grandchildren. His daughter, Arlene R. Hankey, died in 1939.
