Capital Gazette wins special Pulitzer Prize citation for coverage of newsroom shooting that killed five



On January 30, 2004, PATRICIA A. PATTERSON of Bel Air MD, age of 66 years, died peacefully in her Bel Air home. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and manufacturing engineer. She was born April 4th, 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio and was the daughter of the late John David and Joanne Katherine Hawley. Mrs. Patterson graduated from Saint Augustine Academy, Lakewood OH, and Coppin State College, Baltimore MD with degrees in Special Education. She also earned Master Degrees from Loyola College and Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore MD, in Special Education and Technology Management. For the past several years, she worked as a Special Education teacher at Joppatowne High School, Joppa MD, after retiring from Westinghouse as a Manager in the Radar Division. She was an active member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) from 1977 to 1995 and was President of the Baltimore Local Chapter in 1986. Family members said she was a devoted mother of five adult children and nine grandchildren. She enjoyed playing the piano, reading, golfing, traveling, swimming and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing golf as a member of the Executive Women's Golf League from 1986 to 1999. She will be remembered for her lovely smile and for her love and devotion to her family and friends. She was a woman who cared. She was an inspiration to them and will be forever more. Mrs. Patterson is survived by her husband of 46 years, Gregory (Greg) Patterson of Bel Air MD; daughter Catherine McFeeters, husband Robert, and granddaughter Lily Rose of Baltimore MD; son Timothy Patterson, wife Barbara and two granddaughters Jessica and Rebecca of Severn MD; daughter Susan Patterson, partner Lisbeth (Beth) Mog, and grandsons Nicolas and Benjamin of Holliston MA; son Stephen Patterson, wife Donna and two grandsons Kyle and Luke of Hampstead MD; and daughter Jane Rogers, husband James, grandson Riley and granddaughter Matisse of Cincinnati OH. She is also survived by sister Nancy Mascarenhas of Gates Mills OH; niece Lori Card and her husband Arthur of New Hampton NH; three nephews: Daniel Mascarenhas of Mentor OH; David Mascarenhas of Coral Springs, FL; and Matthew Mascarenhas, his wife Heather and their son, Kyle of Coral Springs, FL; and is survived by Dori Hondorf of St. Augustine FL, sister-in-law and wife of predeceased brother, John Hawley; and niece Robyn Polanco and her husband Emerson of Weston, FL.Her family will hold a Memorial Service at 2:00 pm on February 29, 2004, at Vitali's located at 1709 Edgewood Road, Edgewood, MD 21040. Friends are invited to a light buffet following the Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maryland Community Hospice at 9940 Franklin Square Drive, Suite K, Baltimore, MD 21236.
