Restaurant fire in Frostburg does $1 million damage

More than 100 firefighters battled a four-alarm fire in Frostburg early yesterday that burned out the former Lyric Theatre, a three-story building on East Main Street that housed a restaurant, clothing store and nine apartments, authorities said.

The fire started about 6:20 a.m., and firefighters had it under control within about five hours, the state fire marshal's office said.

The Lyric Theatre closed about 40 years ago, and the building was occupied by Gandalf's Restaurant and Pub, and Warehouse War clothing store, which had opened for business Saturday, said W. Faron Taylor, deputy state fire marshal.

Fourteen people escaped unhurt from the apartments above the restaurant, Taylor said.

The fire - estimated to have caused more than $1 million in damage - began in the restaurant's basement.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, he said.
