Jeff Granger scored 18 points and Devin Green and Donald Didlake added 15 each, leading the Hampton men's basketball team to a 75-72 victory over Coppin State yesterday in Hampton, Va.
The first time, Granger made two free throws to give the Pirates a 73-68 lead with 34 seconds left. After the Eagles pulled to 73-70, Jared Woodley hit two more with 10 seconds to play.
Jimmy Boykin scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half for Coppin State. He finished with nine rebounds. Kelvin Green scored 14, and Nicholas King had 11 points for the Eagles.
St. Peter's 76, Loyola 61: Keydren Clark scored 31 points, including a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record-tying nine three-pointers, to power the Peacocks (12-7, 8-2) past the Greyhounds (1-19, 1-10) in Jersey City, N.J.
Loyola, which notched its first victory of the season Thursday, a 63-57 decision over Marist, grabbed its biggest lead at 21-14 after Shane James scored midway through the first half. St. Peter's went on a 7-0 run to tie the score at 21 with 7:07 left.
The score was tied for the last time at 35 with 16:56 left, then St. Peter's went on an 11-0 run.
Charlie Bell finished with 12 points for the Greyhounds.
UMES tied the score at 74 on Aaron Wellington's three-pointer with 1:03 remaining.
But Demarcus Wilkins went 3-for-4 from the foul line on consecutive possessions for FAMU. After a UMES turnover, Terrence Woods added two more free throws to seal the win.
Woods led the Rattlers with 25 points.
Vermont 84, UMBC 59: Taylor Coppenrath scored 34 as the host Catamounts (13-5, 9-0 American East) won their 10th straight.
The winning streak ties for the second longest in school history and eighth-longest active run in the nation.
Andrew Feeley led the Retrievers (6-13, 3-7) with 18 points.
Norfolk State 68, Morgan State 65: Ryan Grier (13 points) made two free throws with six seconds left to lift the Spartans (6-12, 5-4 MEAC) over the Bears (6-10, 5-4) in Norfolk, Va.
Fairleigh Dickinson 62, Mount St. Mary's 56: Led by Gordon Klaiber's 18 points and 12 rebounds, the Knights (11-7, 6-3 Northeast Conference) rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to down the host Mount (4-14, 2-6), which has lost four straight.
Landy Thompson paced the Mount with 20 points.
Johns Hopkins 74, Muhlenberg 51: Danny Nawrocki recorded his fifth double double of the season (20 points, 14 rebounds) as the host Blue Jays (12-5, 8-3 Centennial Conference) defeated the Mules (6-11, 4-7).
Goucher 70, Marymount 53: Jonathan Garritt (Severna Park) scored 16 to lead a trio of double-digit scorers as the Gophers (10-8, 4-4 Capital Athletic Conference) held the Saints (6-13, 4-4) to 19 points and forced 19 turnovers in the second half in Arlington, Va.
McDaniel 85, Ursinus 84: Mike DiPiero hit a pair of free throws with four seconds left to lift the host Green Terror (6-12, 3-8 Centennial) over the Bears (11-7, 7-4).
Washington College 74, Dickinson 73: Kyle Stem made two free throws with one second left to lift the host Shoremen (7-11, 4-7 Centennial) over the Red Devils (3-15, 2-9).
St. Mary's 69, Salisbury 59: Dan Engelstad scored 17 and Jeffrey Turner added 15 to lead the Seahawks (6-10, 4-4 CAC) past the host Sea Gulls (4-13, 1-7).
Lake Erie 69, Frostburg State 53: Tony Tibayan and Nate Malensek each scored 16 points to lead the Storm (8-12, 4-3 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference) past the Bobcats (9-9, 4-3) in Painesville, Ohio.
