Channing Memorial offering course on Christian literature

Channing Memorial Church, Unitarian Universalist, is offering a free six-week course, "The Origins of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature," at 12:30 p.m. Wednesdays, next week through March 3 at 3230 Bethany Lane, Suite 4, Ellicott City.


The group will discuss the role of early Christian controversies in shaping the literature and separating Christianity from its Jewish roots.

Gan Israel Day Camp accepting registration

Gan Israel Day Camp is accepting registration for boys, ages 2 to 8, and girls, ages 2 to 12, for summer 2004.

The camp, which is held at the Lubavitch Center for Jewish Education in Columbia, offers sports, swimming, crafts, music, trips and a hands-on approach to Jewish tradition and history.

Children can attend for one or more weeks between June 21 and July 16. Half-day options are available for preschoolers.

Author Bretholz to speak at 'Lunch and Learn'

Leo Bretholz, co-author with Michael Olesker of Leap into Darkness: Seven Years on the Run in Wartime Europe, will be the featured speaker at a "Lunch and Learn" session, sponsored by Howard Community College's Jewish Student Union.


The session will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. Feb. 12 in multipurpose room 100 of the college's Instructional Laboratory Building, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia.

A light lunch will be served. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome.

'Potential for Inner Peace' set as topic of class

Buddhist nun Kelsang Osel of Vikatadamshtri Buddhist Center in Baltimore will present informal classes, including a brief talk and guided meditation, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, next week through Feb. 24, at the Meeting House, 5885 Robert Oliver Place, Columbia.

The theme is "Nurturing Our Potential for Inner Peace."


The donation is $8 a class. Registration is not required.

K of C council sponsoring breakfast buffet Feb. 8

The Knights of Columbus, Father Comyns Council 9638, will sponsor a breakfast buffet from 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 8 in Harrison Hall, adjacent to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 4795 Ilchester Road, Ellicott City.

The cost is $6 for adults; $5 for senior citizens; $4 for children ages 6 to 11; and free for children to age 6. Proceeds will help support the council's charitable activities.

Dances of Universal Peace scheduled Sunday

Dances of Universal Peace - meditative circle and partner dances that use phrases, music and movement from several spiritual traditions - are scheduled from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday in the meeting room of the Glenwood library, 2350 Route 97, Cooksville.

Beginners are welcome. Admission is free.

Hadassah chapter holding dinner-auction Feb. 8

The Howard County chapter of Hadassah will hold its second dinner and auction for members and friends Feb. 8 at Coho Grill in Hobbit's Glen, Columbia.


A silent auction will provide an opportunity to bid on gift items, toys, gift certificates to local stores and service organizations, weekend getaways and other items.

The $30 cover charge includes nonalcoholic beverages and dairy or pareve (neither milk nor meat) entrees. A cash bar will be available. Proceeds will benefit the Hadassah Medical Organization.

Christian aerobics classes set in two locations

Registration is open for the winter session of Body & Soul Christian Aerobics - high- or low-impact aerobics and strength training accompanied by contemporary Christian music.
