Red Cross to offer CPR, first aid classes

The American Red Cross of Central Maryland will offer several classes in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid next month. Classes include:

Adult CPR, teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and rescue for victims age 8 and older: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Feb. 3, Edgewater Red Cross, 3475 Pike Ridge Road, Edgewater; 9 a.m. Feb. 7, Stanton Community Center, 92 W. Washington St., Annapolis; Feb. 14, Edgewater; Feb. 14, Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Blvd.; Feb. 21, Severna Park; and Feb. 28, Edgewater. Cost: $37.

Adult, Infant and Child CPR, provides training for use with adult, infant and child victims in a variety of emergency situations, including performing rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway and performing one-rescuer CPR: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 21, Severna Park. Fee: $42.

CPR for the professional rescuer, provides advanced-level course for those with a job-related duty to act in emergency situation such as lifeguards, law enforcement and health care professionals: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 7, Edgewater, Cost: $45.

Adult CPR and First Aid Basics, teaches rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway, performing one-rescuer CPR on victims ages 8 and older; first aid basics on how to treat life-threatening bleeding, burns, fractures, shock and sudden illness: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 3 and 5, Edgewater; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 14, Severna Park; Feb. 14, Edgewater; and Feb. 28, Edgewater. Baby Sitter Training, interactive program for youths ages 11 to 15, giving them knowledge , skills and confidence to care for infants through primary school-age children. Includes reacting to emergencies and sudden illness, playing with and supervising children. State law requires children younger than age 8 to be in the care of someone age 13 or older. The course will offered from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 28, Annapolis. Cost: $65.

Crime Avoidance Training, interactive training that focuses on empowering individuals to take responsibility for their safety. The class, organized around a typical day, covers security awareness, tough-target strategies, safety on the move, using an automated teller machine and responding to threatening situations. Instructors will go to a facility, group or organization at a time that is convenient for the group. A minimum of 10 people is required. The fee is $9.95 per person. Colorectal Cancer Kit: Provides brochures on the risk factors and prevention of the disease. It also contains information on nutrition and exercise.

Anne Arundel Medical Center is seeking donors to help ease a blood shortage. The medical center's Blood Donor Center has expanded its hours for donor appointments to:

Mondays, 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Tuesdays, 7:15 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., with evening hours by appointment.

Wednesdays, 7:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with evening hours by appointment.

Thursdays, 7:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

Fridays, 7:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

The county Health Department offers year-round child car-safety seat inspections at three locations:
