Ralph Friedgen said he was going to make offensive linemen a priority during recruiting this year, and the Maryland football coach was true to his word yesterday, securing an oral commitment from Jamie Thomas of Harrisburg, Pa., one of the country's top guards.
Thomas, a 6-foot-4, 330-pound guard from Bishop McDevitt High, chose Maryland over Notre Dame and Tennessee yesterday. Rivals.com, a college recruitment Web site, rates Thomas as the nation's 13th best guard.
Maryland already has received an oral commitment from another highly rated guard, Scott Burley (6-5, 320 pounds) of Woodlawn, and has one from Jared Gaither (6-9, 300) of Eleanor Roosevelt in Greenbelt, who played defensive line in high school but could end up on the offensive line.
The Terps also expect to find out today whether they've nailed down a commitment from Doug Dutch, a heavily recruited wide receiver from Gonzaga (Washington).
