Firefighters to run fast-food outlet for 2-hour fund-raiser
The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department will take over the McDonald's on U.S. 1 in Elkridge from 6 to 8 tonight for McChief Night.
Members of the department will be taking orders, flipping burgers, frying fries and serving sodas. The department will receive 20 percent of all sales during the two hours.
The Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department will also hold a New Year's Youth Dance from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday for those ages 9 to 15. Admission is $7.
Mothers & More chapter in search of new members
The Southwest Baltimore chapter of Mothers & More is looking for new members. Mothers & More is a national support group for women during their active years as parents.
Meetings are held twice a month, on Wednesday evenings, in the Catonsville/Howard County area.

IRS and AARP offering free tax counseling
The Internal Revenue Service and AARP will offer free 2003 tax counseling for elderly Howard County residents. Confidential tax assistance will be given to moderate and low-income taxpayers, with particular attention to those ages 60 and older.

Soroptimists are to meet for dinner Thursday
Soroptimist International of Howard County will meet for dinner at 6:15 p.m. tomorrow at Side Streets Restaurant in Ellicott City.
John J. O'Hara of the Bureau of Environmental Services in the Howard County Department of Public Works will give an overview of recycling and environmental issues in Howard County.
Soroptimist International of Howard County is part of a worldwide organization for women in management and the professions working through service projects to advance the status of women.

Master gardener training set; registration is open
Registration is open for master gardener training by the Maryland Cooperative Extension, Howard County Office. The training will cover plant, insect and disease problems, and other topics related to sustainable and environmental impacts of gardening practices.
Training will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 26 to March 31 at the Maryland Cooperative Extension office in Ellicott City. The cost is $130. New and experienced gardeners are invited to register.

Grandmothers for Peace to hold 'Talkfest' Tuesday
Maryland Grandmothers for Peace will hold a 45-minute "Talkfest" at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Jan. 27 at the 50+ Center at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way.
The discussion will focus on the meaning of peace and how to achieve it.
Admission is free. Registration is requested.
Free cancer screenings planned for those eligible
The Howard County Health Department is offering free screenings for colorectal cancer to Howard County residents who meet eligibility requirements.
The department offers free mammograms to women ages 40 and older who meet certain requirements.
