Family event, dinner planned for Tuesday at elementary school
The Runnymede Elementary School Title I Program will sponsor a family event from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The evening will begin with a family dinner prepared by Runnymede's cafeteria.
Afterward, Linda Witter will give a first-grade presentation and Krista O'Brien will give a second-grade presentation on "Grade Level Expectations in Reading, Writing and Math."
Wanda Weller and Nicole Vogel will provide the children with homework help, story time and other activities.
The evening will end with Family and Child Together (FACT) time when families will share a "Word Rummy" game that they can take home.

Superintendent to present budget at board meeting
The Carroll County Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices, 125 N. Court St., Westminster.
The superintendent will present his operating budget for the 2004-2005 school year to the board.
The regular meeting agenda will be posted on the school system's Web site at www.carr.org/ccps.
Meetings will be broadcast live on CETV, Channel 21 on Adelphia cable, and repeated at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sunday and the following Thursday, and 9 a.m. Saturday.

Pupils to participate in Science Expo Thursday
Pupils from four Carroll County schools will participate in the first Science Expo, a hands-on science museum created for and by pupils, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Gamber fire hall.
Each activity will include materials for pupils to investigate; pupils to guide and assist participants; handouts, printed directions and a bibliography for follow-up after the event; and a selection of topic-related books.
Participants completed proposals that were reviewed by teachers and other pupils. Selected activities will be featured at the expo.
The day will include a display of children's science books presented by sixth-grade pupils, and a group of "Scientists From the Past" will visit and discuss their contributions to science.
The program will conclude with a keynote address by Twig C. George, author of the children's books A Dolphin Named Bob, The Life of Jellyfish and Seahorses.
Pupils participating in the expo include: fourth- and fifth-grade Extended Enrichment Program pupils and fourth-grade classes from Sandymount Elementary, one fourth-grade class from Robert Moton Elementary, selected sixth-grade pupils from Northwest Middle, and pupils from Mechanicsville Elementary.

Free literacy program offered to children, adults
Parents and children in the William Winchester, Cranberry Station and Westminster elementary school districts are invited to attend the Even Start Family Literacy Program housed at William Winchester.
This free program provides adult education classes for parents in need of their GED, early childhood education for children up to 7 years old, parenting workshops, and Parent and Child Together Time (PACT Time).
Classes are held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday in the William Winchester Elementary portable. Parenting workshops are held one evening per week; days and times vary.

After-school group helping with Project Smile
The Community Learning Center's after-school program at New Windsor Middle School, the Giraffe Heroes Project, is participating in Project Smile to help at-risk and displaced children.
Facilitated by Volunteer Carroll, the learning center offers a variety of projects for students to do that help the community.
For Project Smile, students are making 60 activity books for at-risk or displaced children. The books also let the children know others are thinking about them.
Fullwood Foundation honors McDaniel president
McDaniel College President Joan Develin Coley was honored by the Fullwood Foundation Inc. yesterday at its 16th annual Benefit and Recognition Breakfast.
The Fullwood Foundation raises funds to support educational and community-wide initiatives that provide youths with higher-education scholarships and to sponsor recognition and award events that promote excellence.
Harlow Fullwood, the foundation's founder and president, has an honorary degree from McDaniel College.
Coley became the college's eighth president in April 2001. A graduate of Albright College, she joined the McDaniel faculty in 1973.
Also a 2002 graduate of the Greater Baltimore Committee's Leadership Class, she has been chosen twice as one of Maryland's Top 100 Women by the Daily Record. She also received the University of Maryland's College of Education Outstanding Leader in Education Award in 2001.
