Former Del. Hecht to speak at Democratic club meeting

The South Carroll Democratic Club will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the community room of Carrolltown Center in Eldersburg.

Former Del. Sue Hecht, the first woman to be elected to the Maryland General Assembly from Frederick County or Washington County, will speak.

Health and fitness expo Saturday at Carrolltown

Health and Fitness, Freedom Area Recreation Council's adult fitness program at Carrolltown Center, will sponsor a free "summertime dreaming" health and fitness expo from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The expo will feature performances by the Freedom Firestars, Health and Fitness' belly dancers and step and dance aerobics instructors, Sykesville Raiders Cheerleading Squad, Stepping Stars Dance Team, and Talent Express.

Speakers will discuss subjects such as home safety and security and spiritual health. Health and Fitness' certified instructors will offer free body-composition analysis. Carroll Hospital Center will offer free blood pressure checks, stroke assessments and cancer screenings.

Local vendors, including chiropractors, alternative medicine experts and senior care facilities, will answer health-related questions.

Health and Fitness also will offer free fitness classes for adults that day. Classes include: 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., step aerobics; 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., weight training; 10 a.m., senior aerobics easy dance; noon, dance aerobics.

WBAL and 98 Rock's "Detour" Dave Sandler also will be featured.

Adults are invited to wear their most outrageous summer attire to win a weekend getaway. Other drawings will be held for prize packs from area merchants.


Children's activities will include free face painting, crafts and button making.

Freedom Optimist Lacrosse to start signup Saturday

Freedom Optimist Lacrosse will hold registration for the 2004 season and clinics from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 17 at the Freedom Optimist Hall on Route 32 in Eldersburg.

Boys and girls ages 5 to 14 may sign up to play.

Mothers & More plans a pizza social for Jan. 13

Mothers & More will hold a New Year Pizza Social from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 13 at Northwest Medical Center on Georgetown Boulevard in Eldersburg.

Mothers & More offers discussion meetings, guest speakers, mom's nights out, playgroups, children's activities, family activities, book clubs and more for mothers of young children.

Liberty High Drama Club to present 'Class Acts'


The Liberty High School Drama Club will present Class Acts at 7 p.m. Jan. 15-17 in the school auditorium.

Each grade will present a one-act play directed by a student. The four plays, all comedies, include Final Dress Rehearsal, This Is a Test, Plots and Group Therapy.

Tickets are $6 at the door, or may be purchased in advance at the school for $5. Refreshments will be available.

Eldersburg branch library, 6400 W. Hemlock Drive, is offering:

Drop-in Crafts for all ages(children 3 and younger with an adult) from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow.

The Eldersburg Book Club for adults at 2 p.m. Saturday to discuss Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood.

"Saturday Read and Play" for ages newborn to 3 years at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Stories, lap games, tickles, bounces and rhymes, and a playgroup will be featured. Children must be with an adult caregiver.
