DOROTHY JANE JELKS, 79, of Columbus, GA, formerly of Ft. Smith, AR, the beloved wife of Thomas O. Jelks, died at 4:30 P.M., on November 9, 2003, at the Columbus Hospice House, Columbus, GA, with her husband and son, Samuel, present. Mrs. Jelks was born February 5, 1924, daughter of the late W. Clarence Essman and Sarah Allie Rainwater Essman, of Charleston, AR. She was formerly an employee of Sears and Roebuck Company until her retirement in the early 1980's. Survivors include her husband, Thomas O. Jelks, of Columbus, GA; two daughters, Royce A. Patrick, of Hampton, VA and Janice L. Chandler, of Heiskell, TN; two sons, Samuel J. Jelks, of Columbus, GA and Phillip B. Jelks, of Fountain, CO; two stepsons, Thomas O. Jelks, Jr. and Lawrence A. Jelks, both of Baltimore, MD; three sisters, Nita F. Taylor, of Charleston, S.C., Willie E. Hatfield, of Anderson, S.C., and Alice H. Flick, of Rochester, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Graveside services will be held 11:00 A.M., Thursday, November 13, 2003, in Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, Columbus, GA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
