James F. McLaughlin, 78, Union Trust personnel head

James F. McLaughlin Jr., who worked as personnel director for the old Union Trust Co., died Sunday of complications from a stroke at St. Joseph Medical Center. The Timonium resident was 78.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Waverly, he attended St. Bernard Parochial School before graduating from Loyola High School and earning a business administration degree at Loyola College.

During World War II, Mr. McLaughlin served in the Army Air Forces. A ball-turret gunner, he completed 27 missions in the European campaign.

He joined the Union Trust Co. in downtown Baltimore and rose to become its executive vice president of human resources. He retired in 1986.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 at Loyola Blakefield on Chestnut Avenue in Towson.

Mr. McLaughlin is survived by a niece, Joan D. Lackey of Timonium, and numerous cousins.
