A Finksburg family will present a music, drama and dance show tomorrow at the Carroll Arts Center in Westminster as part of a new television reality program being taped for the Discovery Channel.

Kevin and Susan Thornton and their three children will present a "Deck Party with the Discovery Channel" at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

The premise of Money Makeover is for a family to raise money within a month for a specific goal - in this case, $3,000 for a deck for the Thorntons' home.

"The Thorntons are performers," said Sandy Oxx, executive director of the Carroll County Arts Council. "They're using their talents to make a buck. Susan and Kevin have both done so much for the arts that they are Carroll County."

The Thorntons are renting the theater, said Oxx, who would not say how much the facility is charging the family. Arts center staff are donating their time. Susan Thornton previously was performing arts coordinator at the Arts Council.

The show will feature: Kevin Thornton reading his poetry, playing the guitar and singing with Susan and daughter Shanin; Susan reading theater monologues; son Sean's band playing two songs; son Kevin reading his poetry; Tim Jenkins playing guitar; and Eileen Mitchell performing a dance number.

The family, which set a goal to raise $750 a week, had raised $1,420 after three weeks, Susan Thornton said.

"I think the thing that will make or break us will be the show," she said. "I have a lot of confidence we'll make it."

Leopard Films of London, producers of the program, have been taping the family and are expected to tape the show.

Mick Kaczorowski, managing editor of daytime programming at Discovery, said the program has been picked up for 30 to 50 shows beginning in January. The Thorntons' show will be among the first to be aired, Kaczorowski said.
