Application deadline for Junior League grants is Oct. 15

The Junior League of Annapolis Inc. invites Annapolis and Anne Arundel County nonprofit organizations to apply for Community Assistance Donations. A total of $4,000 in grant money will be distributed.

Application packets are available at the Junior League of Annapolis Inc. office, 134 Holiday Court, Parole Professional Center, Suite 306, Annapolis 21401.

A packet also can be obtained by sending e-mail to jlannapo lis@toad.net or downloading a version from www.jlannapolis. org. Completed applications must be returned to the office by Oct. 15.

Applications must be from tax-exempt, nonprofit organizations whose volunteer activities in the community focus on mentoring or help to support and strengthen families. Applicants must use volunteers in carrying out these activities and must use the donation in Anne Arundel County.

Successful applicants will be notified in November and the recipients will be recognized at the Junior League of Annapolis holiday luncheon in December.

Throughout its history, the Junior League of Annapolis has made Community Assistance Donations to more than 98 community groups in Anne Arundel County.

2003-04 business directory is available from county

Anne Arundel County Executive Janet S. Owens recently announced the availability of the 2003-2004 edition of the Anne Arundel County Minority and Women Owned Business Directory. More than 800 county businesses are listed.

The directory was produced by the Minority Business Enterprise Committee, the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp., and the Office of Central Services.

The directory can be obtained by contacting Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp. at 410-222-7410 or the county Office of Central Services, 410-222- 7620. Copies also will be available at the Bankers Forum on Oct. 21 at the Village at Waugh Chapel Center.

Chamber of Commerce to give service awards

The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its annual community awards, to be presented in November at the chamber's annual gala.

Nominations must be submitted by Friday. Forms are available online at www.waaccc.org, and at the Odenton library and several West County chamber businesses.

The chamber is seeking nominees in the following categories: police officer, firefighter, sheriff's deputy, military service member, legislator, business leader and educator.

Criteria include leadership and job performance, self improvement and community involvement.

The Celebrate Community Gala is the signature event for the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce. Business sponsorship and community participation help support the chamber's mission and goals. Tickets to the gala are $40. Information: 410-672-3422.

Homebuyer class:

Community Action Partnership's classes for first-time homebuyers resume this month. Classes are held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the Community Action Agency, 251 West St. in Annapolis. The cost is $25. Information: 410-626-1900, Ext. 1032.

Golf tournament:

The West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, and the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the West County Fall Golf Classic. The golf tournament will be held Sept. 29 at Patuxent Greens Country Club in Laurel. Participants should be registered by 9 a.m., and the tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Breakfast will be served on the open driving range, and an awards cookout at 3 p.m. ends the tournament. Registration is $135 for individuals and $480 for foursomes. Each golfer will receive a promotional giveaway and a gift bag. 410-268-7676.

Flea market:

The Anne Arundel County Historical Society Inc. will sponsor a flea market from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Benson-Hammond House on Aviation Boulevard at Andover Road. The Browse and Buy Shoppe will be open, and tours of the Benson Hammond House will be available. The winning ticket for the society's old-fashioned farm dinner for eight will be drawn at the flea market. Tickets are $5 and will be available until the drawing. Boy Scout Troop 857 will assist with parking as part of its community service. 410-255-2729.

Job fair:

The Maryland Job Service Job Fair will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 at Glen Burnie Mall, 6711 Ritchie Highway. More than 2,000 job-seekers attended a similar event last fall. Employers can reserve table space by Oct. 1 for $200. Checks, payable to Job Service, should be mailed to Bill Franz, Maryland Job Service, 7500 Ritchie Highway, Room 307, Glen Burnie 21061.
