Marie C. Foster, a retired nursing director and community volunteer, died of pneumonia Thursday at St. Joseph's Medical Center. The Towson resident was 72.

Born Marie Siele in Newark, N.J., she earned a nursing degree from St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, where she subsequently worked in the pediatrics department. She moved to Towson in 1963.

In 1994, she retired as the Stella Maris Hospice assistant director of nursing in Timonium.

In her 25 years there, she developed a program for training and certifying nursing aides.

"She had a open heart and open door to anyone in need," said her daughter, Cecilia Foster of Towson. "On a Thanksgiving, or any family gathering, you could find a new face in the crowd, someone Mom brought in to join the family."

She was a volunteer at the Towson Assistance Center and Our Daily Bread.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Ware Avenue, Towson, where she was a Eucharistic minister and parish council member.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Stanley J. Foster Jr.; three sons, Dr. Stanley J. Foster III of Waterbury, Conn., and James and Steven Foster, both of Towson; three daughters, Cecilia Foster and Helen Foster, both of Towson, and Katherine Linhard of Parkton; and four grandchildren.
