More than 800 sneaker-clad volunteers are scheduled to gather this morning at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the Maryland chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's first MS Challenge Walk fund-raiser.
At 9 a.m., participants are to begin a three-day, 50-mile walk across mostly back roads from Annapolis to the Capitol in Washington.
Each walker must commit to raise at least $1,500. One has raised more than $8,700, walk officials said.
The walkers will travel 23 miles today, spending the night at Bowie State University. They will travel 14 miles tomorrow, staying at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, officials said.
The walk, co-sponsored by the MS Society's Hampton Roads and National Capital chapters, is aimed at raising awareness about MS, a chronic disease of the central nervous system, and to provide money for research and programs.
