No. 13 Francis Scott Key (0-0) at North Carroll (0-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Eagles, 8-2 last season, have a potent offense led by 1,000-yard rusher Josh Rutter, who also recorded 123 tackles at linebacker. In last year's season opener, Key powered to a 24-0 win over the Panthers. To have a shot this time around, North Carroll, which performed well in preseason scrimmages against Catoctin and Chesapeake-AA, must keep control of the ball through a balanced attack and dominate the time of possession.

Winters Mill (0-0) at Liberty(0-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Outlook: Coach Ken Johnson, who spent nine years coaching Liberty, will lead Winters Mill in its varsity debut. Last season, he guided the Falcons to a 4-4-1 JV record. Liberty also played host to another first-year varsity program, Century, in last year's season opener. Liberty won that game, 20-2.

Westminster (0-0) at No. 15 South Carroll (0-0)

Time: 7 p.m.

Outlook: Traditionally rivals in the regular season's final game, these two will instead meet in this year's season opener, the result of scheduling wrinkles in the newly expanded Monocacy Valley Athletic League. The visiting Cavaliers are led by quarterback T.J. Swanson, who has a strong arm and a big target, 6-foot-2 receiver Tyler Kraus. The Owls counter with explosive tailback Brandon Costley but are inexperienced on offense.

Century (0-0) at Catoctin (0-0)

Time: 12 p.m.

Outlook: This should be an exceptionally difficult test for the young Knights, who must travel to Thurmont to face a Catoctin team that has several key players back from last season's 6-4 team, including quarterback Jason Johnson and running back Ben Hobbs. The Knights, now have a year of varsity experience and looked strong in a preseason scrimmage against Thomas Johnson.
