Mallory Crosland shot a 2-over-par 37-37-74, and swept to a four-stroke margin in leading six qualifiers for the 17th U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur championship at Mountain Branch Golf Club in Joppa yesterday.
Crosland, from Bethesda, birdied two of the par-5s and had four bogeys.
Lisa Schlesinger, Laytonsville, and Bonnie George, Huntingdon Valley, Pa., were in a threesome with Crosland, but although both matched the medalist's out-going 37, both slipped back on the inward nine.
Schlesinger (37-41-78) "got tired" in posting four bogeys in the last five holes and George (37-44-81) struggled in going 8-over par in her final six holes. George later came back to battle Andrea Kraus of Pikesville (41-40-81) to determine first and second alternate. Kraus won with a par on the fifth extra playoff hole.
The championship will be played Oct. 11-16, at Long Cove GC, Hilton Head Island, S.C.
