Bowie State (0-0) at West Virginia State (0-0)
Site: Lakin Field, Institute, W.Va.
Time: 1 p.m.
Outlook: Expect the same kind of bone-crunching, big-play defense that carried Bowie to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Eastern Division title last season. S Atcheson Conway and 330-pound NG Torrey Gatson are the defensive headliners entering the season opener against an apparently overmatched West Virginia State team that went 1-10 last season and lost to the Bulldogs, 34-7. The Bowie offense? Could a second-year freshman, Lamar Manigo, finally be the answer at quarterback for coach Henry Frazier, who will double as offensive coordinator? West Virginia State is pinning its hopes on a running attack that features Louisville transfer Chris Lester and returning running backs John Bonecutter and Terrell Givens.

Series: Towson leads 12-4
Outlook: The two teams combined for 77 points in the season opener last year (49-28 Towson) before Morgan State's quarterbacks Bradshaw Littlejohn and Lejominick Washington started clicking and before the Tigers brought in imaginative offensive coordinator Phil Albert last spring. The Bears, coming off a 7-5 season that was the school's first winning year since 1979, will be out to prove they are ready to end Towson's domination in this series. The Morgan defense should have a legitimate All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference performer in sophomore SS Larry "Choo Choo" Davis. Towson has All-Patriot League picks LB P.D. Moore, OG Jason Gunning and LB Neal Regan, and look for QB Jay Amer and WR Jason Galloway to further develop as an explosive pass-run combination.
