Mariners update

Seattle has fallen out of first place for the first time since April 14, losing back-to-back games to Tampa Bay while Oakland was thumping the Orioles. Trailing by two games, the Mariners have dropped eight of their past nine. Seattle's starting pitchers were 5-12 with a 6.12 ERA in their past 21 games before yesterday's 3-2 loss. While the A's are starting to get major production from reigning Most Valuable Player Miguel Tejada, the Mariners look like a team that needs a player who can get them over the hump before the deadline to set playoff rosters on Sunday. Bret Boone is batting .297 and hit his 32nd home run for his 101st RBI yesterday. Edgar Martinez is at .303-22-84, but the Mariners could use another run producer. The Orioles took two of three from the Mariners at Safeco Field in July, getting wins from Rick Helling and Sidney Ponson, who have both moved on to other teams.
