Helen K. Thomas, 86, homemaker, golfer

Helen K. Thomas, an avid golfer and sports enthusiast, died of brain cancer Friday at her home in Chestertown. The former Dundalk resident was 86.

Born Helen K. Hardisky in Vestaburg, Pa., she graduated from Centerville High School near her hometown.

She and David I. Thomas, an industrial engineer, were married in 1941. The couple lived in Dundalk while Mr. Thomas worked for 42 years at Bethlehem Steel. They were members of the Sparrows Point Country Club. She was club champion in golf and, with her husband, mixed doubles champion in tennis.

"We both took up golf in our 30s and had played a lot of tennis before that," said Mr. Thomas. "She played softball, too, at shortstop. She was a terrific athlete."

At her husband's retirement in 1982, the couple moved to Chestertown and spent winters at their home in Clearwater, Fla.

In retirement, they joined the Chester River Yacht and Country Club, where Mrs. Thomas again was club champion in golf and also senior Women's Golf Association champion in Delmarva.

Services were held yesterday.

In addition to her husband of 62 years, she is survived by sons Phillip Scott Thomas and Jeffrey William Thomas, both of Dundalk; a sister, Lucille Turner of Baltimore; and three grandchildren. Another son, David John Thomas, died in 1994.
