Gwendolyn K. Peterson, 70, nursing coordinator

Gwendolyn K. Peterson, staffing coordinator of nursing services at Spring Grove Hospital Center in Catonsville, died of heart failure Monday at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. The Pikesville resident was 70.

Born and raised Gwendolyn Kertley in West Baltimore, she was a 1952 graduate of Douglass High School. She was a 1957 graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Antioch College in the late 1960s.


During the 1960s and early 1970s, she was an alcoholism counselor at the old Provident Hospital. She joined the staff at Spring Grove in 1987, and worked there until her death.

She was a longtime member and president of Spring Grove's Local 266 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.


Mrs. Peterson enjoyed writing short stories, reading, sewing, solving crossword puzzles and watching classic movies.

She was married in 1958 to Willie E. Peterson, a Bethlehem Steel Corp. steelworker. He died in 1992.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Home, 5151 Baltimore National Pike.

She is survived by a son, Brian E. Peterson of New York City; a daughter, Alycia C. Howard of Pikesville; a stepdaughter, Gloria P. Johnson of Hyattsville; and a nephew.
